Adroit Ribolla Gialla Basalacchi Vineyard Lodi 2022
Italian wine lovers! One of the rarest plantings in California comes roaring to life â at a price that cannot be beat! 92+ POINTS from the good folks at Robert Parkerâs Wine Advocate...and we SCORED it for UNDER $13!!
AdroĂŽtâŚwelcome to the Last Bottle Universe! Single vineyard, rarer than a Pittsburgh Blue steak grape, critical praise, pedigreed winemaking, jaw-dropping priceâŚletâs seeâŚdid I miss anything?!?! Oh, YEAH!!! Another bottle! Between my content team, and myself, and one of our intrepid buyers that just happened to be walking by as I popped the cork â this beauty is DONE-ZO! Like the green flash of a San Diego sunsetâŚif you blinkedâŚyou missed it! Ribolla Gialla, good people! No, thatâs not the name of some up-n-coming Italian starletâŚitâs an ancient grape, nearly 1000 years old, and grown almost exclusively in northern Italyâs Friuli/Venezia region, with a bit bleeding over the border into Slovenia. Here, in California â youâre looking at LESS THAN 20 ACRESâŚtotal!!! After a bottle of this, and another already chilling on ice â I have absolutely NO IDEA why it isnât more widely plantedâŚand if youâre fast enough to snag some of this, I have no doubt youâll be jumping on that bandwagon right alongside me soon enough. ThisâŚROCKS!
Seriously, lip-smack, scrumptious, and textured, zippy, salty, fruity, waxy, and floralâŚand MORE still! Chris Miller â the same Master Somm turned winemaker behind Seabold Cellars â has done a doozy here with this gem. 45 days ON THE SKINS, neutral oak barrels for aging, and an utterly unreal level of complexity. Orange blossoms, and beeswax, with a dusting of crushed, raw corn, and orange marmalade, with powdered chalk, and lemon balm, sage, and saltwater taffy, too! Dang!!! Golden, almost amber in color, with the weight of a full-throttle chardonnayâŚbut none of the buttery heaviness. Bright, fresh, and intoxicatingâŚwhere HAVE YOU BEEN all my life?!Â
UNDER $13?! What a dealâŚwhat a wine! While it lasts!
** Ribolla Gialla was famously called out by the 14th-century Italian poet, Giovanni Boccaccio, as being a sinful wine that leads its lovers to gluttony. I must confessâŚGUILTY on all counts! **
